A Healthwatch East Sussex (HWES) report on what people told us about health and care services in the Hastings area during our Listening Tour in October 2017.

Non-Emergency Patient Transport Services in Sussex are provided by South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) since April 2017. The performance of the previous provider (from April 2016 – April 2017) was of great concern to patients, members of the public and organisations across the health and care system.

It is the intention of Healthwatch East Sussex to visit all the care homes in East Sussex over the next three years as part of wider engagement plan. This report brings together the findings from our second wave of visits involving care homes providing nursing care.

This report presents a snapshot of interactions between Healthwatch East Sussex Authorised Representatives and patients, relatives, carers and staff including Ambulance staff. This work was carried out over a 24-hour period in Eastbourne District General Hospital and the Conquest Hospital in Hastings and over 12 hours at Bexhill Community Hospital.

During a two week period during November 2016, Healthwatch East Sussex’s Authorised Representatives (ARs) visited two wards in the Trust to observe the care frail elderly patients receive. The visits were unplanned and were designed to capture the interactions between staff and patients as a visitor or relative might experience.
